Black oil Sunflowers are also called Peredovik sunflowers and originate from Russia. Black Oil sunflowers have traditional been used for oil production and bird feed. More recently they have find a new use for human consumption, namely sprouts or shoots. Seed are meaty and sprout very quickly. The black seed coat (pericarp) is easily removed by hand or by washing. Harvest for shoots at 3-4”.
